The
virtual world of social networking has changed the paradigm of everyday routine
of individuals living in contemporary era of booming technology. People posting
about their updates be it personal life or professional promotions, showing off
their newly bought commodities, updating selfies with people they deem
prominent, all in an attempt to sustain a virtual online identity which is far
from reality at best. This difference between real and virtual identity is one
of the major causes of depression and social anxiety these days.
It
seems like the more technology we have the more we are stressed out, social
media have changed our lives, our way of communication, socializing and
especially our way of thinking, people nowadays are more concerned with how the
show their life online rather than how they actually feel or live it in real.
Researchers have found that obsessively and excessive usage of social media
platforms leads to depression, impulsive disorder, problems with mental
functioning, paranoia and loneliness.
Making
new relationships through facebook or other social media sites can be fun and
attractive at the beginning but is not as simple and beautiful as you thought
at first, the major drawbacks of the relationships made through social media
networks are at the higher risk of mortality. Unsuccessful relationships are
not just the reason behind social media depression or anxiety but there is
another major and common factor which we can see in our surroundings and that
is social media ‘comparisons’ and ‘lifestyles expectations’. Social media
creates unrealistic life expectations as Everybody on social media is always up
to something more epic than you are.when a teenager scroll down their newsfeed
seeing people posting a perfect picture of their exciting life, it’s easy for
them to think that all of their friends are having perfect life and he/she is
missing out so in order to get acceptance in the society of social media,
he/she starts showing off a fake yet perfect picture of his life which is then being
a reason for someone else’s depression and jealousy. Girls and women are more
likely to gain negative effect of social media fake lifestyles, They feel as if
their bodies aren’t good enough as many bloggers or other people add filters
and edit their pictures in order to look ‘perfect’. A news report published in
The Express Tribune says that depression affects 44% of the entire population
of Pakistan, Women (57.5%) and Men (25%). Isolation, social anxiety, less
attention, jealousy and stress were the major factors. Social media is for
entertainment, not for competition. Bullying or bashing among kids and adults
is an old age phenomenon but now with the help of social media is far more
common and easy than ever because attacking or insulting someone’s work or look
online is fun but it can have adverse effects on person being attacked. A study
last year by kaspersky lab and iconkids & youth found that 16 percent of
children surveyed said they are more afraid of being bullied online than
offline (in real life). ‘Online bashing can be seen as the new face of
depression on social media’ said department of Health spokesperson Enrique
Tayag.
Social
networking is inevitable. It is an essential part of the globalized world today
and will continue to exist as an important factor in both economic as well as
social ecosystem. Though its societal, psychological and cultural implications
cannot be denied, and thus requires effective measures for its policies and
usage. Just like anything in excess causes problems, so does the phenomenon of
social networking. Overuse of it leads to disruption of social fabric and
confines sociability to mobile and computer screens, which leads to a distorted
sense of perception of relationships, and ultimately depression. The cure to
social networking problems lies in controlled voluntary use of social
networking platforms with focus on functionality rather than for socialization.
It is too general. most of part is taken from some papers and discussion. Find some relevance.

Findings
from a National Survey shows 1787 young adults that were asked about their use
of 11 most popular social media platforms like facebook, twitter, reddit,
tumblr, google plus, instagram, pinterest, snapchat, linkedin and vine.
Analysis showed that people from the survey using all or most of the social
media platforms were likely to have three times the risk of depression and
anxiety because people who use many platforms end up multitasking such as
frequently switching or engaging in social media on multiple devices is related
to poor attention cognition and mood. It seems like the more technology we have

at first, the major drawbacks of the relationships made through social media
networks are at the higher risk of mortality because you never know what is the
background of the person you are interacting with or why he/she is interested
in talking with you? Many more question arises Which may basically sooner or
later harm you and your feelings because texting is a poor way to know someone
which may result in sadness or depression. Unsuccessful relationships are not
just the reason behind social media depression or anxiety but there is another
major and common factor which we can see in our surroundings and that is social

depression and traumatic effects from bullying. ‘Online bashing can be seen as

Samantha
Rosenthal PhD, MPH a research associate in the department of epidemiology at
Brown University School of Public Health says that these factors of social
media are associated with mental health disorders, in a study published last
November that surveyed 264 young adults, they explored that these negative
experiences are common more than 80 percent had at least one negative experience
while 60 percent had more than 4 or more bad social networking experiences.
