TikTok – Another source of vulgarity
Umul Banin-BS -III-Roll108- Feature-revised

After the shameful acts on Television like munni and sheela now the vulgarity is spreading through the applications.

Within entertainment people are going vulgar: At first glance, the app TikTok looks like something I have seen before. In one of the first videos I come across, a 16 year old girl from Karachi, braces dances in her bedroom. The bottom of the user’s shirt is folded up, baring her stomach. A few seconds into the clip, she begins to pose inappropriately and lip-syncing the lyrics. The video plays on repeat and a few viewers have responded with sexually suggestive comments, variations on a theme. Underage girls receive a disproportionate number of creepy comments on the app. As a result, TikTok is rife with porn, images of self harm and attention seeking dares by kids putting themselves at risk to get likes and acceptance. A recent article in the South China morning post featured TikTok posts like ‘I risked my life, please like!’ in a report on the dangerous extremes some children are resorting to gain acceptance on the app. Users may be exposed to bad language and content of a sexual nature. Users can comment on other videos, this leaves the potential for online bullying or negative comments. There has been a TikTok user in Karachi who made a prayer video with a dance. This shows that how people are disgracing religions through TikTok. Parents have expressed concern around the inappropriate language of some of the video posted which makes this less suitable for younger children. Even though some of my friends made such videos in a way which are disgusting to watch. One of my friend made a video on TikTok and after that video people started commenting shit about that video. This made her realize that TikTok is not a platform where she can post anything whatever she wants. With so much user-generated content being uploaded on a daily basis. TikTok is riddled with the same issues of quality control as YouTube, but unlike YouTube, there is no option for “safe search” on this platform. This video sharing app has 150 million active daily users. A market research company it said reported the TikTok app was downloaded 45.8 million times on iTunes in the app store in the first quarter, making it one of the most popular apps on the iOS platform, according to market researcher sensor tower. On iTunes, TikTok is ranked as the 2nd most popular video sharing app. It is available in 36 languages. TikTok is quite popular among young people and seeing their immense interest in it making it more popular. TikTok has more negative impact than other networking sites.

TikTok (formerly) known as musical.ly is a social media platform for creating, sharing and discovering short music videos, think karaoke for the digital age. It was created in 2016 by Chinese internet technology company ByteDance. TikTok is known in china as Douyin. The app musical.ly was used by young people as an outlet to express themselves through singing, dancing, comedy and lip-syncing. However, TikTok is a lot more than just a social network as you can even brush up your acting and dubbing skills with a gulp of fun.

TikTok is just a source of vulgarity but it is up to you whether you are using it for entertainment or to make such irrational videos. Do not post, share or send explicit content, sexual content or nudity. Do not deliberately degrade, humiliate or bully other people, nor encourage other users to do so. People under 16 shouldn’t use this app as some contents are not appropriate to watch. To avoid such kind of vulgarity, there are a lot of options to keep the privacy of a user intact. There are options to block users, limit getting messages from followers only, stop people from doing a duet. However, if you come across an inappropriate comment there is an option to report abuse. This actually gives a lot of power to control the privacy in the hands of the user. By using these kinds of apps you only waste your time and will gain nothing from the app except vulgar things. So, you can use the app for entertainment but use it wisely, in limitations and do not get addicted towards it.

The app is now called TikTok, complete with a new logo, has all of the same features as musical.ly but TikTok is in some way or the other better than musical.ly. However, TikTok is a lot more than just a social network as you can even brush up your acting and dubbing skills with a gulp of fun. Users can select the song they wish to use in their video first, then record themselves miming along to the music. Alternatively, users can record their video first and then select a song. The app has lots of ways to add more fun to user’s videos, for example: there are options to use in slow Mo, time-lapse, fast forward, filters, effects or even play the song backward. There is also a duet feature which allows you to connect with another user and lip-sync together. Once users are happy with their video, they can post it to their followers and share it on other social network such as Facebook, WhatsApp etc.
