Honor Killing in urban areas of Sindh
An honor killing or shame killingis the murder of
a member of a family, due to the belief that the victim has brought shame or
dishonor upon the family, or has violated the principles of a community or a
religion, usually for reasons such as divorcing or separating from their
spouse, refusing to enter an arranged marriage, being in a relationship that is
disapproved by their family, having sex outside marriage, becoming the victim
of rape, dressing in ways which are deemed inappropriate, engaging in
non-heterosexual relations or renouncing a faith.
Since the
last decade or half, honor killing has rapidly increased in the urban areas of
Pakistan. As the word it self defines the meaning, it means to murder a
relative especially a woman or a girl who is perceived to have brought dishonor
to the family. It is common in the rural areas of the country as it is
perceived as a right by the people of the tribes and those people who live in
the backward villages. This violence towards women has even become cultural in
most of the underdeveloped communities.
About
one-fifth of the worlds honor killings are performed in Pakistan but the
significant issue that has arises is that it has been expanded to the urban
areas of the country as well.
The number of recorded honour killings remains at
about a 1000 a year, certain recent developments observed this year are
extremely disturbing. Firstly, the level of brutality. Not that any form of
killing can be condoned, but earlier most women were shot or stabbed to death.
However, in recent months we have witnessed three cases where young women in
their teens have been burnt to death .
Since 2014
it has been reported in number of articles and news of some high profile honor
killings hit by storm. Qandeel baloch is a recent example who was killed in
Multan on July 15, 2016 due to prominent social videos that brought dishonor to
her family and she was killed by her brother in metropolitan. This example
gives number of reasons of expansion of honor killings in the urban areas as
the family belonged to a backward rural area.
The
migration of rural population in the urban areas has resulted into the same
because the people from the tribes bring the same norms and principles of the
community. The very same way in the second largest city of Sindh (Hyderabad)
the same is increasing day by day.
A rreport
from 2018 shows that there was only one case of hounor killingin hyderabad form
the total of thirteen, 32cases of domestic violence one case of child marraige ,and an overall of
213cases of violence against women inall of Sindh . As we know that many of
these cases are not even reported. So the number of these cases must be a lot
larger than this .
Number of
cases has been registered in the name of honor killings since last half decade
and some of them are:

In
2014, two friends were shot dead near sareghat by the relatives of the girls
with whom one of them had married.

In
Aug 2018, a women was killed for marrying her uncle.
·
In
Sept 2018, another case was listed of honor killing where a girl went against
the will of her parents.
So a
criminal mindset is affecting the urban population due to the issues of
migration of backward rural population with criminal record.
In addition
legislation is not even been done since decades on these significant issues of
the society and law enforcement has not also come with vital results that can
control this life threatening cause so it is expanding and affecting the urban
areas like Hyderabad.

Inception of honor killing in Hyderabad
Since the last decade or half, honor killing has rapidly increased in the urban areas of Pakistan. It is common in the rural areas of the country as it is perceived a right the by the people of tribes and those people who live in the backward villages. Violence against women has become cultural in most of the underdeveloped countries.
About one-fifth of the honor killings are performed in Pakistan but the significant issue is its inception in urban communities.
In peaceful city of Hyderabad, honor killing has accelerated in last few years.
Even the city has witnessed a recent tragedy of killing of two friends near sareghat chock near a year ago on august of last year.
Two friends named pyar ali samo and jahangir ali were killed from brutal firing of armed person which was identified as the relative of the family of the girl pyar ali had married . Both died at the spot and investigation was started as told by the concerned SHO Wahid bux laghari.
So the expansion of this mindset has to be perceived a big and challenging threat. Human rights organizations must show some activities and different social organizations should start awareness program for the cause.
Concrete steps should be taken by the Government to tackle issue of such sensitivity in addition strict punishment should be given to the perpetrators.
