Life of an Artist v/s Doctor
Both the disciplines, An Artist and a Doctor are at the opposite
ends of the spectrum in human life, The differences between them are strikingly
radical as they both have different experiences of life, responsibilities and
end goals. Both the disciplines are tough and highly respectful in every aspect
of life but have different pathways which make it unique and different. Not
only apparently but metaphorical they are different as well.
Art and science deal with a very basic and fundamental distinction
that actually differentiates both disciplines from each other on a core
level i.e. the element of subjectivity. Art is subjective while Science is
objective. This subtle yet inescapable determinant of subjectivity has paved
way for both these disciplines (or career paths) and is very much evident in
the resulting evolution of both art and science. Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo Da
Vinci cannot be painted again by another artist and
still carry the same magic. Nor the works of Picasso or Monet be duplicated by
any other person and still be received with high esteem. Instead society would
call such art as plagiarism not art. However on the other hand, science thrives
on experimentation based on previous advances, to ensure validity of recurring
events. It deals with objective nature of events to form its conclusions which
are largely based on processes we can ascertain without doubt. Hence a doctor
evolves and builds upon older advances and makes further developments based on
previously confirmed phenomena.
Doctor usually
enjoys a life that employs "certainty" as its main element. Dealing
with sick patients, prescribing medicines, undergoing procedures, surgeries and
what not, all under strict operating procedures that he must adhere to
diligently.
We
had a small talk with our friend Dr Mahnoor Laghari. on
asking why she chose to become a doctor she said it was my parents dream
that i should become a Doctor. Dr mahnoor laghari
told us, Doctors need to work hard with full concentration as we don't have a chance
to make mistakes. Meanwhile an artist leads a life surrounded by
"uncertainty". An artist's worst nightmare is the blank canvas. As he
starts to gear up for making art, he initially faces an apparent doom in the form of a blank sheet of paper (or
screen) which can lead to either an amazing work of art or a kind of art that
no one would appreciate even one bit. The point is, there is insane amount of
"uncertainty" at play here. The artist fears whether what he wants to
express through his art would really resonate with his audience? what if they
don't understand my message? what if i fail to convey my message through my
paintings? how would the society perceive my work? will it make any difference
to the world at all? fears of others, fears emanating from self, as well as
plentiful other layers of constant reasoning surrounds an artist's thought
process.
The societal responses towards a Doctor and an Artist, our society
have zero tolerance and it's not acceptable that a child should leave his
studies and become what he actually wanted to be since day one. An artist
whether singer, stage artist or painter faces harsh responses from our society
which make it hard for them to work and get appreciation. Our society is
slightly intolerant in this matter. While coming to a medical doctor, his
struggles and societal responses, a doctor is a dignified and noble profession
for us. When asked
Adeel Soomro passionate painter and singer of hyderabad, how an artist sees his
life different from others and what are the societal responses towards an
artist? He replied, our life is more colorful than others, people always
generalises us and our work by saying ‘tum tou artist ho tumhara koi future
naheen hai tum bus rangon se khelte rahoge’. But in real we have the power to
see what a normal eye can't. My determination towards sketching and singing
never let me down over such societal behaviours.
The struggle and hard work of a student to become a doctor or an
artist actually requires a lot of patience and dedication but the later path
ways are not the same. A doctor which is the most dignified profession in our
society once get selected in a medical college have a linear pathway, a normal
and scheduled life with a nice cabin environment for patients he deals with .
While an artist doesn't have a step by step process in his work, does not have
a routined or scheduled life, would have a messy room and dark eyebags. Doctor
have a certainty in his work and it is actually needed because it is the matter
of one's life and death, while artist doesn't have any certainty and it is not
required thou. The work of an artist can be or can not be appreciated by the
audience once or twice and that's okay, because criticism will help an artist
to know about the choice of his audience and to make his work valuable and
worthy he can do better next time with a paint brush or mic on the stage. Often Artists are associated with depression and
unhappiness but two of the recent researches show that artist are actually more
happy than other people. The first is a massive study* using data from the
European Value Survey, the British Household Panel, the Swiss Household Panel,
by the research team at the university of zurich. The survey includes each
person’s occupation, and then asks them to rate their job satisfaction on a
scale from 1 to 10. The results show that “artists generally are happier than
the rest of the population.”
A
second study from Vanderbilt University’s Curb Center for the Arts,
Entertainment and Public Policy, surveyed 13,000 graduates of arts programs.
Examining these results, Curb Center Director Steven j. Tepper says “arts
graduates are resilient and resourceful, they are happy with the careers they
put together. Anthony Carnevale, Director of Georgetown University’s Center on
education and the workforce, seconds this conclusion “artists tend to be happy
with their choices and lives.”
Artists
view the process of working to be of special importance. They particularly
value the opportunity to use initiative in their jobs. The fact they have an interesting
job, have a job which meets their ability. And that they can learn new skills
on the job. These aspects relate to procedural aspects of work rather than to
what is produced. In contrast, artists pay less importance to other aspects,
such as job security.
Emerging artist sami khan, University of sindh dropout. He left
his studies because he wanted to become a singer and opened his own studio of
singing on asking he told us about the environment of an artist, A dark and small room, so many big and small
paintings on the walls of room, a corner full of books and sketches, and dim
light this setup will actually irritate a normal person but this is the
environment of an artist, our lives are not perfect. we have ups and downs we
get rejections but that's my biggest strength and it makes me to become a
better singer and furthermore he has a message for our young students that a
person who spends millions on his studies with what he is not happy with will
not succeed but a person should recognise his passion and work on it and he
will excel.
Our society needs both the professions. No discipline is less
worthy or less respectful as both have different responsibilities in our
society, doctor deals with the cure, solutions of a
patient while artist is not confined with the answers only, his thought process
can also encompass questions, provocations or expressions .We should not
neglect art as it is the core part of every culture and society because
art is an individual's innate need to express his or her own self.

Make intro interesting. These are
profession not disciplines here. Only Proper noun and first word of sentence can be capitalized.
Proper noun (Dr mahnoorlaghari) not capitalsied.
Why to capitalize An Artist and a Doctor? This will be published. Such mistakes will be counted as
blunder.
