A tale of two cities- Hyderabad and Karachi

A comparison of Economical, Political, Educational &Sports Aspects

Charles Dickens set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution in his historical novel A Tale of Two Cities (1859). Though here is not such revolution. But even then it is story of two cities- Hyderabad and Karachi. The two cities are of the Sindh province with a distance of 139.

 The first thing comes in our mind is that Hyderabad is the 2nd largest city of Sindh and the population wise 8^th largest city of Pakistan. This city was founded in Kalhora Dynasty. Hyderaabd has remained capital during Kalhora and Talpur rules. After British rule it developed as main market of rural Sindh. On the other hand Karachi is the former capital of our country. The British government made it first commissioner office and later in 1936 made it as capital. It was developed as seaport city, hence we can say that Karachi is a back bone of Pakistan, that also interacts with the Sindh, and the most popular city of Pakistan. Now it is industrial and commercial hub with cosmopolitan colour.

Now, we will talk about the comparison rate between the two cities. Karachi has heavy and huge industrial complexes, while Hyderabad, with Kotri site area has few hundred industries.

Hyderabad-Karachi is the Industrial sector that contributes 25% to 30% of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of Pakistan with the major concentration of the Industry in an Arc, stretching from Karachi to Hyderabad & 75% of the Sindh industry is located in Karachi-Hyderabad region.

Karachi is the financial and industrial capital of Pakistan with an annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimated at £113 billion in year 2014, from the expert the GDP projected to be £193 billion expected in upcoming year 2025 at the growth rate of 5.5%.

Karachi produces 30% of value added in large scale in manufacturing and 20% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP),

World Bank identified that Karachi is the most Business friendly city of Pakistan. its high GDP is based on its large industrial base with high dependency also on the financial services sector Textiles, Cement, Steel, Heavy machinery, Chemical and Food Banking and the major Industrial Sector contributing to Karachi’s GDP/

On the other side the Hyderabad producing less GDP as compare to Karachi but the ratio of Hyderabad is 10% GDP annually to Pakistan. Karachi-Hyderabad together generate 30% annually to the Pakistan Economy.

Hyderabad is an important commercial center where industries includes Textile, Sugar, Manufacturing of Mirror , Soap , Ice Paper , Pottery , Plastics and Handicraft Industry including silver and goldwork, Ornamented Skills and EmbroidedLeather Sandals are established Hyderabad produces almost all of the Ornamental Glass Bangles in Pakistan as well as layered glass Inlay for jewelry, Hyderabad is surrounded by fertile alluvial plains and commercial center for agriculture , which produce Millet , Rice , Wheat, Cotton and Fruit and produces the major outcome to supporting the Economy of Pakistan,

So far political interaction between two largest cities of Sindh is concerned, Hyderabad has many political parties, but eighties Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has been winner in the elections. It has some pockets of Pakistan Peoples Party and JUP. Presence of Jaamat Islami and nationalist group is also felt in the city.

Similarly Karachi has many small and large political parties. The MQM remained strong till July 2018 elections when PTI made some dent in the vote bank of MQM.  Karachi operation and division in MQM opened path for other parties. Some area Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) bagged good votes. Before emergence of MQM, Jamaat Islami, PPP and JUP represented Karachi. But situation changed in eighties.

Now, current situation of Karachi voted to the new party Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) with hope  that it under the leadership of Imran Khan he can do something better than other parties. However MQM is in alliance with PTI in federal government and in opposition in Sindh Assembly.  Mayorship of Karachi is with MQM.

Hyderabad is more peaceful than Karachi. If we look few years back, we can see street crimes; acts of terrorism, targeted killings and other criminal activities like, extortion were high. Under operation the Rangers solved these problems and the crime rate is low.

In Hyderabad there is street crime but less than Karachi in living areas, many areas are there where fear of that criminal activities.

In simple words, we can said that Hyderabad is more peaceful city as compared with Karachi.

Hyderabad is Educating 75% males & 65% of females over the age of 10 were literate in Hyderabad district in 2010a region which includes rural areas around the Sindh, 26% of children in Hyderabad district were enrolled in paid private schools in year 2010,

Hyderabad has less University in compare of Karachi. Hyderabad has one general in public sector, - Sindh University. The University of Sindh was founded in Jamshoro in 1951. The engineering University - Mehran University was established in July 1976.  Hyderabad has one public sector medical university called LUMS. It was started as medical school in 1881 and now it is known as Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS). Hyderabad has Isra University, NUUML University in private sector. Now The government College Kali Mori Hyderabad has been made university in public sector, but has not started functioning. Prime Minister Imran Khan also announced a university under federal government.

Karachi is home to several major public sector universities. Karachi first public University dates back from the British Colonial Era, Sindh Madarsatul Islam founded in 1885 was granted University status in 2012, Sindh Government Science College in 1887 was granted University status in 2014,

Nadirs Edulgee Dinshaw University of Engineering & Technology (NED) was founded as college in 1921 and is the Pakistan’s Oldest institution of higher learning,

Dow University of Health & Science was established in 1945 now one of the Pakistan’s top Medical Research Institution. University of Karachi is founded in 1951 is Pakistan largest University with a student population of 24,000. The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) were founded in 1955, Dawood University of Engineering & Technology which opened in 1962 offers Degree Programs in Petroleum, Gas, Chemical & Industrial Engineering

Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) operated by Pakistan Navy, is associated with the National University of Science & technology (NUST) and many more private institute and University as well like IqraUniversity , Aga Khan University and so on,

Hyderabad has only One International Stadium named as Niaz Stadium located near Rani Bagh with a capacity of 15000 seats.

 Karachi has many stadiums all the kind of sports can be hosted by Karachi easily.  Recently Karachi has hosted the Pakistan Premier League (PSL) season 4 & expected that next year more facilities will provided to the players & citizens as well

When it comes to sports Karachi has distinction in 1877 where the first attempt was made to form a set of rules of Badminton. First ever International Cricket match in Karachi was held on Nov 20, 1935. Karachi has huge number of public places and parks, while Hyderabad is missing such faculties.

Both cities have their own values.

Now Political interaction between two largest cities of Sindh , Hyderabad have many political parties around but the citizens of Hyderabad elected six to seven time MuttahidaQaumi Movement (MQM) the citizens of Hyderabad giving faith and they might thought that this party may provide the best policy and also working well for them, build their better Educational system where they educate their children , MNAs & MPAs shouted in assembly for the rights of their citizen and raise their problems to the elected government, they all are the employees of the citizens to government and the source of communication, similarly Karachi have many small and large political parties

But (MQM) was strong and the citizen of Karachi’s believe that this party solve their problems provides the best way of living, works in the development and provides the better policy for Business and everything for their benefit.

Now, current situation of Karachi-Hyderabad their citizen this time nominated and give the chance to the Raising Party named as Tehreek e Insaf in the Light of chairmen Imran khan in 2018, and trusted that he could be the savior and they can provided the justice to them, work on the Unemployment decreasing unemployment or county in a develop and civilized country,

Hyderabad is more peace full than Karachi, if we look few years we can see the bad governs and street crimes and many other criminal activities like target killing, bhatta khori is high on its peaks but now a days rangers have solved these problems and the ratio of criminal activities has become less than before Hyderabad there is no street crime in living areas, many areas are there where fear of that criminal activities but some time you will receive the news of criminal activities in some areas,

so simply Hyderabad is more peace full city as compare to Karachi,
